Hrelić Flea Market in Zagreb

rtc

It is widely known that one gets to know a city best by visiting its markets and flea markets. This is exactly why Hrelić is a total must see in Zagreb. It is a special market in Zagreb's, pretty distant from the city center, but offers authenticity and a peek in a realistic life of Zagreb.

It is the best known Zagreb flea market, it has its soul and each Wednesday and Sunday, whole year long, for years, it has been showing a new world to everyone who wishes to see and experience it; it's retro, vintage, original, and best of all, it's cheap!

Hrelić is real, life-like, colorful and full of stories. There are people, the atmosphere, music, smells, noise, its concept…

Each item laid on the dusty paths of Hrelić tells its story, keeps secrets from someone's basement or attic. Everyone shops at Hrelić, as there is something for everybody.

There is a variety of clothes, footwear, technical goods, sporting equipment, furniture, trinkets and gadgets for your home, books, cars, antiques, magazines, newspapers and various bizarre stuff I can hardly describe. Forgotten items, from other times and systems, yet so original, that they're timeless.

If you want to pay a visit to Hrelić, you need to have about 50 kuna (6.5€) on you and some good will. You will take a walk along the river Sava, get all covered with dust on a dirt road and you will then reach the flea market all sweaty and dirty.

Once you get there, start at the beginning. There is no real, or any, order in the "stands" and you never know when you'll simply run into something you weren't even looking for in the first place, yet it will be perfect for you. Just keep in mind that at Hrelić, you aren't the buyer. It is the items that buy you. You need to be prepared for "digging" through mounds of items on the improvised stands, as that is the only way to successfully shop at Hrelić. And haggle, please, it is necessary, ask for a free item, or for a discount if you bought a bunch of stuff.

When you're done shopping, if you get hungry or thirsty, get something from Hrelić menu. There are ćevapi (minced meat rolls), baked peas, meat stews and a rather recent dish, vegetarian sandwiches.

Make sure you take a camera with you, because you must to snap a photo here and there of different scenes at Hrelić.
